Spray painting is one of the most demanding applications for an air compressor — get the wrong one and you'll end up with an inconsistent finish, pressure drop mid-panel, or a compressor that can't keep up with your spray gun. This guide tells you exactly what you need.
Why Spray Painting Is Demanding
Unlike nailers that fire short bursts, spray guns run continuously — demanding a consistent, sustained airflow for as long as you're spraying. A compressor that's adequate for nailing might be completely overwhelmed by a spray gun.
The key figures for spray painting are:
HVLP vs Conventional Spray Guns
Conventional spray guns atomise paint at high pressure (40-60 PSI) and use a lot of air — typically 8-15 CFM. They produce a fine finish but waste a lot of paint through overspray.
HVLP spray guns (High Volume Low Pressure) use lower pressure (10 PSI at the air cap) but higher volume — typically 4-15 CFM depending on size. They're more efficient, produce less overspray, and give better transfer efficiency. Most modern professional painters use HVLP.
Touch-up spray guns are smaller HVLP guns for detail work and small areas — typically 2-3 CFM. Perfect for repairs, touch-ups, and small projects.
CFM Requirements by Spray Application:
| Application | Gun Type | CFM Required | Recommended Compressor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touch-up repairs | Small HVLP | 2-3 CFM | TAC24L or TAC50L-M1 |
| Furniture & small projects | Medium HVLP | 3-5 CFM | TAC50L-M1 or TAC50L |
| Full car panel spraying | Medium HVLP | 4.6-5.6 CFM | TAC50L Twin Motor |
| Full car body spraying | Full-size HVLP | 10-15 CFM | TAC100L or TAC130L |
| Industrial spray finishing | Full-size HVLP | 12-15 CFM | TAC100L or TAC130L |
Our Spray Painting Compressor Recommendations:
For touch-ups and small projects — TAC24L: At 120 L/min FAD (4.2 CFM) at 6 Bar, the TAC24L handles touch-up spray guns and small HVLP guns with ease. Perfect for furniture refinishing, small repairs, and hobby spraying. Ultra-quiet at 75-80dB.
For single car panels and medium projects — TAC50L-M1: The TAC50L-M1 handles medium HVLP spray guns (up to 4.2 CFM) continuously. Good for spraying individual car panels, furniture, garden furniture, and fencing.
For full car spraying and professional finishing — TAC50L Twin Motor: With 240 L/min FAD (8.5 CFM) at 6 Bar, the TAC50L twin motor handles full-size HVLP spray guns for continuous car panel spraying. The 50-litre tank maintains consistent pressure throughout the job.
For professional bodyshops and industrial finishing — TAC100L or TAC130L: Full-size HVLP spray guns require ~15 CFM for continuous operation. The TAC100L (300 L/min / 10.6 CFM FAD at 8 Bar) and TAC130L (400 L/min / 14.1 CFM FAD at 8 Bar) are built for exactly this — professional bodyshop and industrial spray finishing.
